Upgrading Your VIC-20
The VIC-20 is a capable machine that can be enhanced significantly!
Memory Expansion (Essential!)
The VIC-20's 5K of RAM is limiting. Expand to run more software:
| Expansion | Total RAM | Benefits |
|---|---|---|
| 3K Expansion | 8K | Run 8K games and programs |
| 8K Expansion | 13K | Most common expansion size |
| 16K Expansion | 21K | Run larger programs |
| 24K+ Expansion | 29K+ | Maximum software compatibility |
Storage Options
- 1541 Disk Drive: Yes! Same drive works with VIC-20
- Datasette: The C2N works perfectly
- SD2IEC: Modern SD card storage solution
Display Upgrade
The VIC-20 uses the same video output as the C64. Upgrade from RF to composite video for a sharper picture.
What You CAN'T Upgrade
- Sound chip (VIC chip vs C64's SID - very different)
- Graphics resolution (fixed at 22 columns)
- Sprites (VIC-20 has none)
"The VIC-20 with full memory expansion is a surprisingly capable machine. Many programmers prefer its simplicity!"
