Joystick Connection Guide
Nothing beats arcade action on your Commodore! Here's how to get started.
Joystick Ports
Your Commodore 64 has two 9-pin joystick ports on the right side of the computer:
| Port | Primary Use | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Port 1 | Paddles, Mouse | Some games use this for Player 2 |
| Port 2 | Primary Joystick | Most games expect the joystick here |
Recommended Joysticks
- Competition Pro: ***** The professional's choice. Microswitches for precise control.
- Atari CX40: **** Classic and reliable. Works with all Atari-compatible ports.
- Commodore 1311: *** Official Commodore joystick. Good for beginners.
- QuickShot II: *** Affordable with rapid-fire feature.
Pro Tip: If a game doesn't respond to your joystick, try the other port! Some games are picky.
Testing Your Joystick
Type this short BASIC program to test your joystick:
10 PRINT CHR$(147) 20 J = PEEK(56320) 30 PRINT "JOYSTICK VALUE:"; J 40 GOTO 20
Move the joystick and watch the numbers change!
